Pick the Right Format

First, start  with the right format you choose for the resume. The most used and common format for resumes is reverse chronological. In this format, you start with the most recent experience and work your way backward. This format is great for showing career progression, especially if you have held leadership positions in the past.

There are more options such as:

  1. Functional format for those who change careers or have gaps in their work history.
  2. Combo format for those who have a strong set of skills and enough work experiences.

Write a Strong and Relevant Summary

A professional summary is a speech to brief you about how fit you will be for the applied job. It should, therefore, instantly catch the eye of the recruiter by enlisting your most relevant qualifications and achievements.

Here is an example:

Results-oriented General Manager with more than a decade of experience in driving operational excellence to boost profitability through leading cross-functional teams.

Highlight the Key Skills

Verify that your resume responds to the specific job opening for a General Manager by highlighting the type of skills being asked for. Selections might include the following:

  • Leadership & Team Management
  • Financial Oversight & Budgeting
  • Strategic Planning & Execution
  • Operational Efficiency
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
  • Sales & Marketing
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Performance Metrics & KPIs

Where relevant, for each of the stated skills, try to include very specific examples of how you have applied it within a professional setting.

Professional Experience Description

Develop your work experience section to outline the value delivered to the organization you worked for. Use bullet points in describing your responsibilities and achievements, while beginning each point with an active strong action verb-abrasively led, implemented, achieved, optimized.

Example:

General Manager | ABC Retail, New York, NY

January 2018 – Present

  • Led a team of more than 30 employees across three stores that resulted in 15% increase in customer satisfaction and a 20% improvement in annual revenue.
  • Supervised operations based on inventory control, employee training, and financial reporting.
  • Crafted and implemented a new customer loyalty scheme that, within its first six months, increased repeat customers by 30%.

Add your Educational Background

List your education in reverse chronological order, including highly recognized degrees for GM positions such as business administration, finance, or management. Make sure to mention any relevant certifications.

Example:

  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) - University of Michigan, 2010
  • Certified Manager Certification (CM) - Institute of Certified Professional Managers, 2015

Optional

Incorporate Leadership and Industry-Specific Achievements and include any type of industry awards or recognition you have won, adding them here as evidence of your leadership credentials.

Example:

  • General Manager of the Year at XYZ Corporation 2019.
  • Designed cost reduction initiative for the entire company to realize ongoing annual savings of $500,000.

Align Your Resume for ATS

Most companies use an ATS to filter out the applications and select the right set of candidates. The applicant should try including relevant keywords from the job description into his or her resume naturally to get a better chance of passing the initial screening.

For example, if "cross-functional leadership" or "profitability management" is on the job posting, it should find a place in the applicant's resume wherever applicable.

Refine the Design

A clean, professional design will help your resume stand out. Keep it simple with a lot of white space, clear section headings, and a legible font. Avoid too much decoration because clarity and professionalism are what count.
